Keep Your Seafaring Career Current: Understanding Mandatory STCW Updating Training

To enhance maritime safety, the 2010 Manila Amendments to the STCW Convention (STCW 2010) introduced crucial changes, with the most significant being the requirement for all seafarers to update their mandatory safety training modules every five years

This essential 5-yearly STCW updating training applies to the following critical areas:

  • Personal Survival Techniques

  • Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting

  • Advanced Fire Fighting

  • Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (other than Fast Rescue Boats)

  • Proficiency in Fast Rescue Boats

Seafarers revalidating their MCA Certificate of Competence must provide proof that they've either completed these courses within the last five years or have undertaken the necessary updating training. Failing to meet these STCW Manila Amendments requirements can lead to a failed port state control inspection, resulting in significant delays and fines for your vessel.
